The Soundtrack

What Sound is and does to the film!

Sound for film is made up of three layers; dialogue, sound effects and music. Sound shapes the viewer's interpretation of the visual images through engagement of a second sensory pathway. Sound enhances emotional responses and can signify plot developments, character psychology or reaction to events. Sound is never benign in the world of film; even the absence of sound has a purpose. In film the term sound effect refers to all the sounds and noises other than dialogue and music. Sound effects provide texture and detail to the sounds cape of the narrative. For example, the creaking door in a horror movie will sound quite different from the creaking door in a teen romance as the romantic lead sneaks into the girls' dormitory. The other sound which is used in films is the music. Music is used primarily to enhance or establish a film's mood and tone. It may also signal impending plot movements and give insights into character's motivation and psychology. Music is a powerful technique for consolidating a sense of place and time within the narrative.

The group working on soundtrack!

When we first started doing our soundtrack, we did not know what types of sound effects to use because we did not finish the editing so we just experimented on sound effects and mixed them up to see if it makes a good sound. At the end we did have some effects that sound good but some that did not go into the thriller atmosphere. So we changed some of them and let it there because we did not have the film finished and edited so we did not know where to put the sound effects.

After we finished our filming and editing we used the soundtrack and put our film into the soundtrack pro to help use with the timing. So after doing that we started to change the places of the sound effects to connect it with the film/timing. After doing that we added more sound effects after watching the shining which this helped use to make our soundtrack even better. We tried to make the same atmosphere with the shining because in shining the music is really good which builds up most of the tension. In the part where the killer comes into the bedroom, we wanted to keep it quite because in most of the thriller films when its quite you know some thing terrible is going to happen. In the soundtrack we had heart beats when showing the girl/victim in the wardrobe to show her fear. At the end we wanted some thing that scares people because the killer just find the girl in the wardrobe that why we used a sound effect which the shining contains.

After doing the soundtrack, we worked on our film. There is a dialog which we had to make the soundtrack go low so that we can hear what is going on the phone. So when the girl is on the phone we made the music go low which helped use hear the girl speaking on the phone. Another part where we straggled was when the girl exits the bathroom and the water is opened. So when the girl leaves the bathroom we had to make the water sound go lower as the girl walks to her room. So to do this we use the mount symbol to play with the volume of the water. So as the girl walks towards her bedroom we low the volume down and it worked really well so it was not like the water just stops at one point.
