How does mise en scene communicate time, place and emotion in life on mars?

This is a work piece on how life on mas uses mise en scene to communicate time.

In life on mars, on the first extract there is a lot of emotions happening example of what police looked like , they look like they know what they are doing and the time they are in which shows that they are from the time they should be, no one from a different time. There body language shows that they are confidence in there jobs, no confusion happening. There are cold expressions on the police and they just look smooth and straight, there is not a lot of thinking time when the camera shots the character. In extract two Sam which is the police from the 20th Century look confused, shocked, thinking a lot which shows that he does not know where he is and its just weird for the characters because being at a different time all of a sudden. These all tell the audience that the character are not in the right place and at the right time, its more like they do not know their self’s. In extract two Sam is agitated and is looking around, you will not look around if you know the place you live in example like in extract one, Sam know where he’s going and did not look surprised because he does not know where he is but in extract two he is surprised.

On life on mars the camera plays a big part, as I realised that in the first extract the camera takes its time when showing a place on the city, office and houses is and when is it in the 1970’s the camera shows the changes and the audience instantly know that the scene is not in the 20 Century any more but in a different time. At the end of the extract one there was a shot of the I-pod playing a song and it showed the highway ,car and the suit Sam was wearing as well, but when the time changed to 1970’s the first thing the audience saw was Sam in the old Elvis cloths which was poplar in the 60’s and 70’s. when you see this part of the soup you notice that the time has changed and the nice black suit is gone. Then the camera shot the car that Sam was using which was a jeep has changed into an old car. Inside the car was an tape which was an I-pod, the tape was in the 70‘s and had ended in the 90‘s. So to communicate the different with the time , the camera shot all the things that are going to change after the car accident.

The music that plays in the first extract, life on mars plays from the I-pod but then in extract two the same music plays but in a different time and in a different stationary , the music shows that Sam the character is in the same place he was but not in the same time but in the 70’s.

In extract one it takes its time to change a cut when showing things that is going to change in the extract two. In extract one , the police offices was all modern with the new computers, mobile phones and coffee machines but when the time changes all that is gone in the office, the places of the table have changed, the decoration has changed. The scene in the 19 Century was in the same office but looks yellow, books on the floors, too mess to even stay in. In the 20 Century version there was no papers , no books on the floor, its was more heather place to stay and it was tied. In the 19 Century version there was no computers, no mobile phone and there was no coffer machines in the police office there was no space to even sit down. There was no serious on any cases just drinking coffee and smoking. The smoking shows that extract two is in the part because now people know what smoking can do and its band from public places but in 70’s people did not know what smoking can do to you and it was not band (it was normal to smoke, if you did not you were not a men). In 20 Century space is an important thing to people , now people just do there work on the computer and save it and there is no us of paper but in 19 Century people did not care if there is carbon dioxide because they did not know that it can do to the earth and they did not care if trees are getting less, they did not have responsible that we have in the 20th Century.

How do you obtain and consume music?

This is a piece of writing about how i obtain and consume music myself. the work is about how i get information about new music and how get buy or get my music from. i talk about what the music industries doing to make music!

From the music industries I obtain and consume music from downloading from lime wire and itune and I same times buy albums which is not often. I buy my albums from HMV with the full price but when its Christmas and when the albums are on sale I buy the album because it’s cheaper then it is normally. I do not buy singles because it’s a waste of money, I can get an album from the sale for the same amount of money for a single (full price). So there is no point of buying singles but I mostly get my music at home for free.

I find information about new music from newspapers. Cause a newspaper is a dairy paper it tells a lot of music information like in the sun, there is a page that rights about the top 20 selling albums and the top 10 singles in the week. I look at the chart to see which albums sell the most and what people like to buy. It shows me what category the music is in from showing if the album is in the top 5 of 2 week that will show me the album is a good quality of music. The other way of reading music information is magazines, a lot of magazines interview singer which is out with their new album or single and talk about what they have done and what we will see in the album. On the context it writes about new music or albums which is most liked for teenagers and tells us if it’s in the top 10 album selling.

Other then the reading materials there is the internet which you can go on and get information about what the names are of the music’s in the album and you can listen to it on youtube.com which is free to listen and you can us the video of your own blog. On the internet you can even learn the price of the album so if it’s an album for me and the price is good then I go to the shop and buy the album or if it’s expensive of me, I wait until its price goes down. Other then the internet you can listen to the music and you can see the music video, you same times can not see the music video on the internet but instead you can see photos of the singer. On the TV you see programs interviewing the singer you are interested in and you get a date of when the album is coming out.  I prefer more of the TV and internet because I get more information about the coming album and what is going to be expected in the album.

The places I hear music is when I am walking down a pub or a partly. Cause I mostly go shopping I hear music in shops, when I am eating in Mc Donald’s and when I am walking down a market example chapel market. I hear music from my neighbour’s house which my neighbour is a guitar player. I mostly hear music everywhere out side.

I listen to my own music on my ipod or my mobile phone with my hand sets, same times I listen to music at home on my computer. I listen to music on my computer when I am at home, finished my homes work so I can not be street out because I work and exams.I listen to music when I am walking which makes me get into a rhythm and encourages me to walk fast, like it gives me energy. I listen to music on the TV which plays all the time like in Turkish soups, adverts, soup trails, film trails, on TV there is a continual music going on. Because I listen to music that is pop, hip hop and R & B music, it’s on TV all the time and I do not really need to buy the music.

I prefer not to pay for music because there is the free one and why should I pay when I can get it of free but if there is an album that I really want I buy it full price but if it’s a album that I want but not much I wait to its price can go down and so then I can buy it. Music is now a cheap things to buy off the internet and listening it of free in you tube (with out downloading). I do pay same times of music on the internet and that’s because I can not find it on lime wire and it’s a single which I really want. At home I have all ready got cassettes and CD which I love to listen and on my computer I got so much music so I do not often buy music a lot now. In a year I buy only about 6 to 8 albums which is the maxim and only 4 will be the full price. I buy music on the internet often as well like in a month I buy 10 to 15 single music and the rest are free from lime wire or my friend sends me the music she is listening to from msn. The albums and singles depends if I want it a lot of not or I will not pay. I mostly buy R &B because it’s a mixture of music in one album really.

I think that in the music Industries , music got money all at once like example when the CD’s came out they sold expensive and did not think what will happen next. When new technology came out they used it and tried to sell all the albums at once and did not carry about the next. The music industries did not think before acting , they moved quickly and at the end  they lost and now no one is buying music. As said in the class when napster came out the music industries should of owned it and then should of said that to us napster you should pay £10 a month and us it as much as you want. I think people would of paid £ 10 a month other then paying £10 to £20 for one album. The music just wanted to win all the time, get money all the time but instead  they got money for about a year and then they got nothing from making albums. They did not want to get money slowly , they wanted more money all the time and that did not happen. I think by making albums , singer are not going to get money but other then going and giving concerts. The music industries went back to the beginning.

MY EDIT PROCESS

This was a tutorial to learn how to use final cut pro. this is the process we have been though.

In class I have learnt how to edit my video and add special effects. The first thing I learnt was to open system settings and set it up for my student drive. After getting the set up ready I then had my footage captured so I can then have the film on final cut pro. So to do this I went on menu bar and then choose log and capture, then I pressed play and now. After the film was captured, I then cut the film into each shot. I did this so I can see all the shots I have, I named them as what it shows and what shot it is. I did this by putting a mark in which is (i) at the beginning on the shot and put a mark out (o) to end the shot. After that I dragged the video pieces I marked into the storages, so it was in the storage and I named it to not get it mixed up. I did this process with all the shots, even the ones that I do not need. So I organized all of my work and stored it where all the clips are. After finishing the organizing, I started watching my first shot in the film, on the viewer, which I double clicked to have it on the viewer. After watching it I had marked the shot again to have the best bits in, after marking it by putting a in and out mark, I dragged and dropped the shot on to the time line, which in below the viewer. When I dragged the video and put them together, I did have problems with it because sometimes it had a blank space with what showing black on the screen but I had moved them a bit more closely to not have the black shot in the film. After getting all the other shot on to the timeline, I played the watch on the timeline, which the video plays on the canvas screen.

When I looked at my film, it was too long and a bit boring because its was too long, so on the right side of final cut pro there is a tool bar where are is tools you can us to cut clips, roll, ripple, slip and slide, these tools are to trim the video. The tool palette is so useful because when there is a shot that is boring, or need to be short you use the tools to make it shorter and the video work. So in my film there was shots that I did not need to I used the razor blade to trim the clips I did not need. So after a while I had my film ready to get special effects to make the film interesting then before. The Brower where our clips are, there is a section which writes effects, once you click on it you see a list on effects. On the listing there are favorites, video transitions, video filters, video generators, audio transitions and audio filters. What I went on first was video transitions where there are 3D simulation, dissolve, iris, map, page peel, QuickTime, slide, stretch and wipe. These are all the effect types there are in video transitions, so I when on to 3D simulation and there I find cube spin which moves the screen. I really liked that effect so I planed to use it on my video. So I tried using it but did not work so I ended up having cube spin on the scene where I am watching and changing the shot to my back walking. So I put it in-between the two videos and it works really good, I was scared of the cube spin looking cheap but it worked well. After enjoying using the special effects I planed to use more of them but not too much but because I did not have much clips I stopped using them and moved on to the text.

In films we us texts to see what the film is called and how was working for the film. So I planed to use a text to show the name of my video, which I named it ‘the shock’. This time and I when on effects again went on the video generators which had the listings of bars and tone, Boris, matte, render, shapes, slug and text. I went on to text and a different box came up showing the types of text there is, I went on to text and started writing. When the text came up, it showed it on the viewer, which wrote text next to it. On the video player it did not have any section to write my text, it only showed sample text with a black background. Afterwards I find out on the top on the viewer there are a section of video, controls, filters and motion. I went on to controls, which have a section to write my text, the size of the writing and the font. I only changed the writing into ‘the shock’ and changed the colour of the writing in to blue. After writing I when on video and watched the writing, because it was too long I put an in and out mark and then dragged it to my timeline, to the beginning. After that I went on to the credit, where I wrote who was the director, the camera man, stars, sound and who edited the film. I done this and then did the same process for what I did to the title of the film.

After getting all of the editing, I started with the sound which I used soundtrack pro to make the sound effects or music. I picked a music which was scared but after that I put on some sound effects like, breathing noises, footsteps and heartbeats. After finishing with the soundtrack I imported the sound to final cut pro. It did not work the first time I import it because the sound was not on place and the music was too long and did not go with the timing so I went back to sound track pro, and I separated the sound effects with the music and import them to final cut pro and place them on to the time line. Then I went on working on the music which I cut the bits that was too low and boring which was the beginning and the end. I used the blade which is on top of the timeline, left corner. After getting the low bits out I went on to final cut pro and check how long my film is which it was 25 seconds, so I when on the music and cut same bits again to make it 27 seconds. After getting it all done I import it to final cut pro and then place it to the timeline. It worked well but the end of the music cuts out and it sounded wrong so I went on the effects of the browser, went on the audio transition and choose fade which faded the music towards the end. After getting the music done, the film was ready to go.I really like my finished piece because every shot went well and it looks in a high quality.
